Turning up the Summer Heat

Can You See Yourself Here?

So here we are winding up the month of July with a summer that already seems to be too long and too hot. If you are like me, you are thanking God for your AC and some cold southern sweet tea with a slice of lemon perhaps. Winter or some facsimile of it will arrive eventually here in Florida in the coming months thank you Jesus to provide a welcome break to our temperatures and humidity with heat indexes over 100 on many days. While we may not thrive during these days most of us will find a way to survive. This leads me to wonder about our spiritual lives for those of us who are Christ followers as to whether we are just trying to survive as believers or are we focusing on thriving for the kingdom’s sake during these dog days of summer. As believers we do not want to have a “we’re just getting by, counting down the days, just holding on to Jesus returns” mentality.

The issue here is that if this is our mentality we will not be on fire spiritually speaking in the summers or winters of our lives and certainly not making our time count for the cause of Christ. To make sure our spiritual batteries remain charged we need to not only gather with God’s people on Sundays and Wednesday evenings or whenever your church doors are open, but we need to be opening up God’s Word on a regular basis throughout the week. Stay in God’s Word on a regular basis, assemble on Sunday with God’s people in His house, and meet with God in the middle of the week for Bible study and fellowship. While we may not enjoy being hot in summer, we can’t let our spiritual fires burn down and go out as we need to stay hot for the cause of Christ, not lukewarm, not cold, but seriously committed to staying on fire for the advancement of the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Only one life will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.
